Description

A third catalogued impression of Hasui's Teranohama composition, this print depicts the beach at Kaiganji on the Seto Inland Sea coast of Kagawa Prefecture. The site takes its name from the coastal temple Kaiganji and lay along pilgrimage routes associated with the Shikoku 88-temple circuit, giving the subject both scenic and cultural resonance within the meisho-e tradition. The broad horizontal banding of sand, sea, and sky characteristic of this composition provided Hasui's printers at the Watanabe workshop with a demanding test of bokashi precision across wide, uninterrupted color fields. Variations between this and earlier impressions may appear in the tonal weight of the water area, the warmth or coolness of the sky gradation, or the contrast between the dark pine forms and the pale beach. The dampened washi used in shin-hanga printing allows colors to fuse softly at their edges, an effect critical to the serene quality of this coastal subject.
