Description

Kawase Hasui's view of the Kintai Bridge in Suō Province (Suō Kintaikyō), from the Souvenirs of Travel III series (Tabi miyage dai sanshū), depicts the celebrated five-span wooden bridge crossing the Nishiki River at Iwakuni in what was formerly Suō Province (now Yamaguchi Prefecture). The Kintaikyō, first constructed in 1673, is distinguished by its alternating structural logic—three high-peaked arched spans flanked by two flat end spans—creating a rhythmic silhouette of interlocking curves that became one of the most reproduced architectural subjects in Japanese landscape art. Hasui's composition likely captures the bridge from the riverbank or from the shallow water below, exploiting the repetitive arch forms as an ordered horizontal structure against mountain or sky. The Nishiki River's clear water and the surrounding mountains of the Chūgoku region provide background and reflection. Warm timber tones in the bridge structure contrast with the cooler palette of water and sky typical of Hasui's Chūgoku compositions.
