Description
The Meoto Iwa, or married couple rocks, stand offshore at Futami on Ise Bay in Mie Prefecture, linked by a thick shimenawa rope renewed each year in Shinto ceremony. The larger rock, associated with Izanagi, bears a small torii at its crown; the smaller stands to the right. From the shore the rocks frame the rising sun at the summer solstice, aligning the site with the worship of Amaterasu enshrined nearby at Ise. Hasui's composition positions the rocks in strong silhouette against an early-morning sky rendered in graduated bokashi, the sea around them animated with wave texture printed from a separate block. The shimenawa's curve connects the two formations and introduces an arc into an otherwise vertical arrangement. This was one of Japan's canonical scenic views, and Hasui's treatment balances the site's Shinto gravity with the atmospheric sensitivity characteristic of his mature landscape work.
