Description
Tsutanuma—comprising several small interconnected ponds within the ancient beech forest surrounding Tsuta Onsen in Aomori Prefecture—is among the most distinctively northern landscapes in Hasui's catalog. The ponds, whose still surfaces reflect the surrounding forest canopy, offer a subject that rewards the technical capabilities of woodblock printing: replication of mirror-like reflections through carefully registered horizontal color blocks, and rendering of filtered forest light through subtle tonal gradations across a relatively high number of color passes. Hasui's composition likely places the viewer at the water margin, with the pond surface extending into the picture plane and beech trunks framing the scene on both sides. The human figure, if present, would appear small within the vertical grandeur of the forest. The subdued palette associated with the deep forest interior—muted greens, pale blues, soft ochres—distinguishes these prints from Hasui's more dramatic coastal or urban snow scenes and reflects the quieter register of his northern landscape subjects.
