Description

Matsushima Bay in Miyagi Prefecture, one of Nihon Sankei (Japan's three celebrated views), is distinguished by several hundred pine-covered rocky islands scattered across calm tidal waters. Hasui visited Matsushima and included it among his most important landscape subjects. The twin-islands composition focuses on two specific pine-topped rock formations, likely viewed from the shore or from a low vantage point over the water. The black twisted pines, characteristic of the coastal growth habit produced by sea-salt winds of Matsushima Bay, are rendered with the deliberate specificity that distinguishes Hasui's botanical observation from generic landscape convention. The calm bay water, in flat blue-gray or teal tones, reflects the pale sky above. The composition likely includes the distant suggestion of other islands receding into mist, creating depth through atmospheric recession rather than linear perspective. Hasui produced several views of Matsushima across his career, and this composition would have been among those designs published and reissued by Watanabe Shozaburo for their sustained commercial and pictorial appeal.
