Description
This print depicting Yuhi Waterfall at Shiobara may represent a variant printing or related composition within Kawase Hasui's sustained engagement with this Tochigi Prefecture site. The Shiobara gorges, carved by the Hokkigawa River through volcanic terrain of the Nasu Highlands, provided Hasui with a subject combining the dynamic movement of falling water against static rock and dense forest. The falls descend through mixed mountain vegetation, with the surrounding canopy rendered through careful gradation work that suggests the damp, shadowed atmosphere of the gorge interior. In such vertical compositions, Hasui guided the viewer's eye downward through the cascade, using the white of the washi paper for the brightest sections of falling water and building up darker tonal areas for the rock face and shadowed foliage. The print exemplifies the shin-hanga approach to landscape, combining compositional conventions rooted in Japanese print tradition with a heightened attention to atmospheric light conditions.
