Description

Yumoto Onsen is a mountain hot spring resort in the Okunikko region of Tochigi Prefecture, situated at approximately 1,478 meters elevation near Lake Yunoko, the source of the Yukawa River. The high altitude brings substantial snowfall from late autumn through spring, making it a natural subject for Hasui's winter landscape compositions. The print likely shows the small onsen settlement in snow—low-roofed ryokan with snow-laden eaves, steam rising from outdoor baths, and the forested slopes of the surrounding Nikkō mountains. The proximity of Yumoto to the famous Tōshōgū shrine complex made it a natural stop on the Nikkō tourist route. The combination of human habitation, steaming water, and snow-covered mountain nature aligns with themes recurring throughout Hasui's mature travel work, particularly his documentation of the Kanto and Tōhoku regions.
