Description

Zaimoku Island at Matsushima (Matsushima Zaimokujima) was published as part of Collected Views of Japan, Eastern Japan Edition (Nihon fūkei shū higashi Nihon hen), one of Hasui's major series documenting scenic sites across the country. Published by Watanabe Shōzaburō in ōban format, the series presented views from both the western and eastern halves of Japan, and inclusion of Matsushima reflected its status as one of Japan's canonical scenic locations. In this composition, Zaimokujima's columnar rock formation and crown of Japanese black pines are shown across the bay's reflective surface, with the characteristic atmospheric treatment of water and sky that defines Hasui's mature meisho-e style. The series context places this print within a systematic documentation project rather than a standalone composition, linking it to the broader Nihon fūkei shū enterprise.
