Description
This print shows Zaimoku Island in Matsushima Bay from a viewpoint or under atmospheric conditions that distinguish it from related versions. Matsushima's islands were accessible by boat, and Hasui may have sketched the bay from multiple vantage points. The distinctive rock formation of Zaimokujima—columnar stone risings resembling stacked lumber—and the pines rooted in its summit crevices are the central subjects, with the bay's reflective surface extending into the foreground. The quality of light shown in any given printing of this design significantly affects the print's register: an overcast sky produces solemnity, while clear afternoon light produces a warmer, more open feeling from the same composition. Differences in palette between this and related prints help situate the impression within Hasui's publishing history with Watanabe or Doi Hangaten.
