Description
A third version of Zaimoku Island in Matsushima, this print shows another printing of a composition Hasui returned to across his career. The longevity of Matsushima as a subject in his output reflects both the site's cultural prestige as one of Japan's three celebrated views and its visual suitability for the woodblock medium: calm water surfaces, bold rock formations, and sculptural pine trees are all elements well served by layered color printing and precise line work. Variations between this and related prints—in sky tonality, water color temperature, or key-block impression sharpness—are typical of extended print runs in the Watanabe and Doi publishing enterprises. Comparing multiple states of the same Hasui design is an instructive exercise in woodblock print production, as block wear and colorist decisions leave visible traces across an edition's history.
