Key value factors: As self-carved and self-printed works, sosaku-hanga value is tied to the artist's reputation and edition size. Larger formats, earlier editions, and historically significant works command the highest prices.
The great Tenjin Bridge (Tenjinbashi) spanning the Okawa River in Osaka was, at the time of Kazuma's print, one of the longest arch bridges in Japan — its elegant curve and the river traffic below it a natural subject for an artist drawn to the relationship between bridge, water, and city. This woodblock print, from an unidentified series, captures the distant view of the bridge: its span reading as a gentle arc against the city skyline, the river beneath it alive with boat traffic and the reflected light of the surrounding urban landscape.
