Key value factors: As self-carved and self-printed works, sosaku-hanga value is tied to the artist's reputation and edition size. Larger formats, earlier editions, and historically significant works command the highest prices.
The Seto Inland Sea — Japan's great enclosed body of water between Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, dotted with hundreds of islands and famous for its calm waters and remarkable light — was a subject Kazuma approached with the painterly sensitivity it demands. The Inland Sea's beauty lies in its atmosphere: the quality of light filtered through its maritime haze, the way islands of varying sizes create layered depth in every direction, the particular blue of its sheltered waters. Kazuma's version captures this atmospheric quality with the lithograph's or woodblock's capacity for nuanced tonal gradation.
