Views of Osaka: Harbour (Moonlit Night), dated 1919, belongs to Oda Kazuma's early Osaka-themed series produced just after the First World War. The print is documented on Artsy at https://www.artsy.net/artwork/kazuma-oda-views-of-osaka-harbour-moonlit-night. The 1919 series, often catalogued in English as Views of Osaka and in Japanese under titles centered on Osaka hakkei or related Osaka-port subjects, is one of the earliest substantial bodies of work in which Oda's mature landscape voice appears. Oda Kazuma (1882-1956), born in Tokyo as Oda Iwajiro, trained under the Western-style painter Yamamoto Hosui before working as a draftsman and lithographer at the Ministry of Finance Insatsu Kyoku printing bureau, the government office that produced banknotes, postage stamps, and official documents. He then turned to watercolor sketching and woodblock printmaking across the 1910s and 1920s as his principal mediums. He was an active member of the Nihon Sosaku Hanga Kyokai, the Japan Creative Print Society, founded in 1918, and his prints are typically self-carved or executed in close collaboration with carvers and printers rather than handed off in the publisher-led [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) model of Watanabe Shozaburo. The Osaka harbor at night was a charged subject in the late Taisho period, the port a hinge of modern industry and trade still readable in its older coastal forms, and the design participates in a particularly Kansai sensibility, registering the city's working waterways rather than the Tokyo cityscapes that dominated parallel shin-hanga production. Oda's compositional habit of low horizon, generous sky, and a single anchoring vessel or wharf gave such scenes a quiet weight, with [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradation across the water carrying the moonlight and the bokashi-printed sky carrying the cool of the hour. The Osaka series is among the prints by which Oda first established the regional landscape program he would extend through the 1920s and 1930s, and impressions of the cycle are preserved at the Tokyo National Museum, the Kobe City Museum, the British Museum, the Honolulu Museum of Art, and the Library of Congress, the principal institutional holdings for the artist's mature output.
