Kataoka Gadō II, one of the leading actors of the Osaka kabuki stage at the close of the 1830s, is shown by Kitagawa Toyohide in the role of Hattori Kingorō in this 1841 single-actor portrait. The print belongs to the final pre-Tenpō-Reform months of Osaka print production: the 1842 sumptuary edicts that suspended Osaka's commercial print trade for five years had not yet taken effect, and Toyohide - signing under his gō Ichiryūtei - was still publishing single-actor portraits of named performers in named roles, the precise type of print that the reforms would shortly outlaw. Hattori Kingorō is a stock role-type of the Osaka kabuki repertoire, a samurai retainer figure who appears across several plays of the Soga and other vengeance cycles. Kataoka Gadō II, who would later take the senior Kataoka Nizaemon name, was at this stage of his career a rising tachiyaku (male-role) specialist of the Kado-no-shibai and Naka-no-shibai theatres of Osaka. The Kataoka acting line was one of the dynastic families of Kamigata kabuki, paralleling the Ichikawa and Onoe lines in Edo; successive bearers of the Kataoka Gadō and Kataoka Nizaemon names supplied Osaka stage with its leading male-role performers across the nineteenth century. The print exemplifies the tightly controlled single-figure compositional schema that characterised Toyohide's surviving prints, with the actor framed against an undecorated ground that concentrates pictorial weight on the precise tilt of the head and the falling lines of the costume. Held by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, within the Spaulding Collection of Osaka prints.
