Description
The fifth design in Kobayakawa's celebrated series "Modern Styles of Makeup" (Kindai jisei no sho), this print presents a close-up study of a woman's lustrous black hair, arranged in a modern Western-influenced style. Kobayakawa's bijin-ga broke from the gentle, nostalgic femininity of mainstream shin-hanga to portray women of his own era — self-possessed, fashionable, and psychologically present. The deep blacks and subtle sheen of the hair demonstrate the expressive range his woodblock technique could achieve.
