$5,000–$40,000. Common subjects: $5,000–$10,000. Key value factors: Very limited output makes all prints relatively scarce. The 'Styles of Contemporary Make-up' series is most collected.
From 1931, "#6 Rouge" is among the most celebrated of Kobayakawa's makeup series, depicting a close-up of a woman's lips as she applies rouge — an act at once intimate and performative. The radical cropping, focusing on a single feature of the face rather than presenting the full figure, was strikingly modern for its time, anticipating the close-up aesthetics of cinema and photography. The brilliant vermillion of the cosmetic against the pale skin creates a chromatic intensity that is simultaneously sensual and graphic.
