In this elegant bijin-ga, a woman bends in concentration over a sheet of paper, composing or transcribing a poem with brush and ink. Kobayakawa's rendering distinguishes her from the conventionally passive beauties of earlier woodblock traditions: her posture suggests cultivation and intellectual engagement, qualities of the educated modern woman as much as the classical courtly ideal. The act of writing poetry — composing waka or haiku — was associated with aristocratic sensibility, here reframed within Kobayakawa's modernist vision of femininity.
