"Pedicure" (Tsume), from 1930, extends Kobayakawa's investigation of the beautified body to the feet, presenting the intimate act of attending to the nails of the foot with the same artistic seriousness he brought to facial cosmetics. The extreme close-up removes the figure from any setting or context, making the foot and its careful attention the complete subject. This radical reframing of what constitutes worthy subject matter for woodblock art was characteristic of Kobayakawa's challenge to conventional bijin-ga aesthetics.
