$5,000–$40,000. Common subjects: $5,000–$10,000. Key value factors: Very limited output makes all prints relatively scarce. The 'Styles of Contemporary Make-up' series is most collected.
"Styles of Contemporary Make-up: no. 1, Tipsy" (Kindaijisesho no uchi: ichi, Horoyoi), from 1930, opens Kobayakawa's landmark cosmetics series with one of his most psychologically complex images: a woman in the pleasantly intoxicated state of slight tipsiness, her expression unguarded and softened. The choice to begin a series about modern beauty with a woman rendered slightly beyond her usual self-control was characteristic of Kobayakawa's determination to depict women as psychological subjects rather than decorative objects. The flushed cheeks function simultaneously as cosmetic effect and physiological condition.
