A 1904 Russo-Japanese War triptych, this woodblock print depicts one of the engagements that formed the bloody centrepiece of Japan's early 20th-century conflict with Russia. Kiyochika returned to war imagery for the Russo-Japanese War after a decade away from battlefield subjects, producing dozens of prints that recycled and updated the visual vocabulary he had developed during the Sino-Japanese conflict of 1894–95. The triptych format, smoke-filled atmosphere, and heroic groupings of soldiers recall his earlier campaign imagery.
