This undated print depicts a woman bathing — a subject that occupied a small but recurring place in Kiyochika's output alongside his more celebrated landscapes. The figure is rendered with the naturalistic modelling of Western academic art rather than the flattened conventions of traditional ukiyo-e bijin, reflecting the Western visual training Kiyochika absorbed from Charles Wirgman and other Yokohama-based foreign artists in the early Meiji period. The intimate domestic scene contrasts sharply with the dramatic public subjects for which Kiyochika is best remembered.
