Kiyochika reaches back to the early Edo period for this April 1896 bijin-ga, depicting beauties in the dress fashions of the Kan'ei (1624–44) and Shōhō (1644–48) eras. The historical costume study was a genre that flourished in the Meiji period as audiences grew nostalgic for pre-modern Japan, and Kiyochika's version draws on the conventions of the Kaigetsudō school and early Torii-style bijin-ga while processing them through his own Meiji sensibility.
