Major General Odera commands the assault on the Hundred-Foot Cliff (Hyakusekigaisho) at Weihaiwei in this 1895 oban triptych, its Japanese title Ikaiei hyakusekigaisho ni Odera shosho funsen su — "General Odera fights fiercely at the Hundred-Foot Cliff of Weihaiwei." Odera Yasuzumi commanded the Third Division during the Weihaiwei campaign, and Kiyochika's portrait of his leadership at the cliff assault commemorates one of the most dramatic operations of the war's final phase. The triptych format allows the cliff's full vertical drama to unfold across all three sheets.
