Japanese scouts reconnoitre Qing positions near the Yalu River in this December 1894 nishiki-e, the scouts moving through autumn-bare terrain with the river glinting in the distance. The Yalu River crossing of October 1894 had marked Japan's expansion of the war from Korea into Manchuria, and the intelligence-gathering operations surrounding the crossing became subjects for Kiyochika's war prints. This quiet reconnaissance scene offers a contrast to his more explosive battle compositions.
