Japanese scouts advance through snow-covered terrain near Niuchang (Niu-chuang) in Manchuria in this 1894 triptych nishiki-e, the night patrol navigating by the faint starlight visible through the overcast sky. Snow and night combined to create some of Kiyochika's most atmospheric war compositions, the white ground providing the only light source while figures move through the darkness. The Niuchang scouts scene captures the unglamorous reality of winter intelligence work that preceded the formal battles his more celebrated war prints depicted.
