General Nozu Michitsura — commander of the First Army's Fourth Division in the First Sino-Japanese War — is shown commanding the assault on Haicheng in Manchuria in this May 1896 commemorative print. Haicheng fell to Japanese forces in January 1895 after Nozu's troops broke through Qing defensive positions. The post-war portrait of a field commander on his decisive battlefield was a genre Kiyochika contributed to through the mid-1890s as the military remembered its victories.
