The transport ship Saikyōmaru — a converted passenger vessel serving as an ammunition and supply ship — fought an unequal engagement with Qing warships off Haiyang Island in September 1894 and survived through a combination of evasive manoeuvring and the gunnery inaccuracy of its attackers. Kiyochika's October 1894 nishiki-e dramatises the "hard fight" as an act of naval heroism, the unarmed transport's survival against armed warships given the quality of a miracle by the print's treatment.
