Ryōgoku in snow — the great entertainment and commercial district that flanked the Sumida River on both banks, famous for its summer fireworks and year-round markets — is depicted in this early 1877 nishiki-e as the city lies blanketed in winter. The snow muffles the usually raucous district into a quiet, the Ryōgoku Bridge visible through falling flakes, its wooden structure whitened. This is among Kiyochika's earliest works in his characteristic atmospheric mode, already demonstrating the control of winter light that would define his mature landscape output.
