Matsuchiyama — the sacred hill topped by Shōten-ji temple in Asakusa, famed for its association with the Kangiten deity — is depicted in this March 1896 [nishiki-e](/glossary/nishiki-e) at the second month of the lunar calendar, still in winter snow at dusk. The purplish sky of approaching night contrasts with the white-covered hill and the distant rooftops of the city below, creating the kind of precisely calibrated dusk composition that was among Kiyochika's most technically demanding. The seasonal date — second lunar month, before spring equinox — specifies the print's place in the annual cycle of Tokyo landscape imagery.
