Umewaka Shrine — dedicated to the spirit of the boy Umewakamaru, a legendary figure associated with the Sumida riverbank at Mokuboji temple in Mukojima — is depicted in this circa-1879 [oban](/glossary/oban) [nishiki-e](/glossary/nishiki-e) with the close documentary attention of Kiyochika's early Tokyo meisho work. The shrine's precincts, shaded by ancient trees and bounded by the characteristic low fence and stone lanterns of small Tokyo shrines, offered a quiet counterpoint to the more dramatic riverside and urban subjects that dominated his landscape output. The Meiji period's print includes Kiyochika's signature in the traditional placement.
