Key value factors: As self-carved and self-printed works, sosaku-hanga value is tied to the artist's reputation and edition size. Larger formats, earlier editions, and historically significant works command the highest prices.
Great Bridge at Senju, a 1913 color woodblock print, depicts the historic crossing over the Arakawa River in northern Tokyo. Senju was a famous departure point on the road north from Edo, and its bridge carried centuries of travel and commerce. Tobari's color print gives the structure a physical presence enhanced by the registration of multiple blocks, each color layer adding depth to the bridge's mass and the water's movement beneath it. The 1913 date places this work at the beginning of the [sosaku-hanga](/glossary/sosaku-hanga) movement's formal organization, making it an early statement of Tobari's commitment to artist-driven printmaking.
