Inn at Odawara

Inn at Odawara, a Taisho-era woodblock, depicts accommodation in the castle town that served as the last major stop on the Tokaido road before the Hakone mountains. Odawara's inns hosted generations of travelers, and their architecture reflected both function and regional building traditions. Tobari renders the inn's structure with the sosaku-hanga artist's direct engagement, carving and printing the building himself rather than delegating to craftsmen. The result captures not just the inn's physical form but the printmaker's own response to its proportions and textures, each knife cut recording a decision about what to include, emphasize, or simplify.
