Description

The Nigetsudo Temple at dawn under snow — the Nigatsu-do hall at Nara's Todaiji perched on its hillside, its approaches and rooftops covered in fallen snow, the early light just beginning to define the forms — creates a composition of extraordinary tonal restraint. Kotozuka's title (二月堂雪旦, Nigatsu-do at snowy dawn) precisely names the moment: the hall in its characteristic position overlooking the Nara plain, the snow still fresh and undisturbed, the light emerging but the moon perhaps still visible in the western sky.
