"Aspirations (Kibo)" — the Japanese word kibo expressing hope, desire, and the orientation of the self toward a better future — appears as the title of this undated Senpan print, suggesting a figure or composition in which the posture of reaching forward, of looking ahead, is the dominant visual gesture. Senpan's aspirational subjects are less common in his oeuvre than his grounded, physical festival and nature compositions, but they reveal a dimension of his practice interested in the inner life of his figures — what they want as well as what they do.
