Description
The hot spring at Yunohama in Yamagata Prefecture — a coastal onsen resort on the Sea of Japan side of the Tohoku region, known for its beach-side bathing facilities — is Senpan's subject in this undated nude print. Yunohama's combination of hot spring bathing and coastal setting gave Senpan the outdoor nudity subject that was most central to his practice, the women bathing in proximity to the sea rather than in the more contained environment of a mountain onsen. The coastal setting adds the additional visual element of light on water and the sense of open air.
