Description

Lake Yogo lies in the mountains of northern Shiga Prefecture, a small, nearly circular lake associated in legend with the tale of a celestial maiden who lost her feathered robe while bathing on its shores. In winter the lake freezes and the surrounding hills carry heavy snow that transforms the landscape into a nearly monochromatic field. Senpan's composition likely emphasizes the flat expanse of the snow-covered lake surface against a winter sky, using unpigmented washi to suggest snow through absence of pigment rather than addition—a technique well suited to mokuhanga's hand-printing process. The contrast between the white expanse and dark tree forms or shoreline recalls the snow-landscape tradition shared by shin-hanga and sosaku-hanga printmakers, though Senpan's personal approach favors directness over atmospheric refinement. The site carries a quiet, numinous quality in Japanese literary and artistic culture; Senpan's version grounds the scene in seasonal observation.
