Chapter 16 of The Tale of Genji's concluding sections — Sawarabi (早蕨, "Early Bracken") — is a short chapter in the Uji chapters that follows the death of Prince Niou's wife and depicts the sorrow of her sisters. The "early bracken" of the title refers to the spring plant gathered by mountain communities, and the chapter takes its name from a poem about the arrival of spring even in sorrow. Maeda's illustration for this intimate chapter captures the emotional atmosphere of grief and seasonal renewal through his characteristic combination of natural motif and courtly figure.
