Chapter 35 of The Tale of Genji — Wakana II (若菜下, "Young Greens, Part Two") — continues the deterioration of Genji's world, focusing on Murasaki's illness, Kashiwagi's violation of the Third Princess, and the complex sufferings that radiate from these events. The second half of the double Wakana chapter is among the most psychologically intense in the novel, and Maeda Masao's illustration must find visual equivalents for the darkness underlying the chapter's courtly surface through his characteristic pattern-based compositional approach.
