Description
This impression of Maeda's Lake Ashi morning view joins multiple versions of the same composition in the collection, a pattern consistent with the sosaku-hanga practice of printing editions by hand in relatively small numbers. Each hand-printed impression introduces minor variation: paper absorption affects ink density, baren pressure influences tonal evenness, and the humidity of the printing session alters how pigment sits on washi. The composition itself frames Fuji at the hour when the mountain stands in partial silhouette against a brightening sky reflected across Ashinoko's surface. Maeda's influence from both Nihonga and Western painting is evident in how he handles transitional tones — neither purely flat in the ukiyo-e manner nor fully modeled in the Western sense, but achieving depth through layered, translucent color passages. The Hakone region, accessible from Tokyo, was a common destination for Showa-period artists seeking to document Fuji from fresh angles.
