Description

One of several impressions from Maeda's composition depicting Fuji above Lake Ashi at dawn, this print reflects the artist's sustained engagement with the mountain as a landscape subject. In the sosaku-hanga tradition, the artist's direct handling of tools is legible in the print surface — tool marks, slight irregularities in color application, and the hand-burnished washi all carry expressive intent absent from commercially produced shin-hanga. The morning vantage from Ashinoko places Fuji beyond a broad expanse of still water, framed typically by shoreline pines or reeds at the composition's edge. Bokashi gradations in the sky zone would require precise registration across multiple blocks to achieve the dawn atmosphere indicated by the title. Differences between this impression and others in the series may be subtle — slight shifts in ink tone, color saturation, or the texture of the handmade paper — each the result of individual printing passes with a baren.
