Description
Without a surviving title or visual record, this untitled work by Masao Maeda can be situated within the technical parameters of Japanese woodblock printing on [washi](/glossary/washi): multiple carved blocks, registered color impressions, and the characteristic visual qualities that distinguish woodblock from intaglio or planographic processes — the slight embossing of water-based ink into the paper's absorbent surface, the fine grain texture occasionally visible in solid color areas, and the clean edge where one color block ends and another begins. Washi's receptivity to water-based pigments contributes to the soft matte surface quality distinctive of Japanese woodblock prints, and the interaction between ink and paper fiber produces the color saturation and edge definition that define the medium's visual character regardless of subject matter.
