A pleasure boat drifts along the Oi River near Arashiyama, its passengers sheltered beneath a canopy of overhanging cherry blossoms. This subject combines three elements central to Kyoto's cultural identity: the river, the cherry trees, and the tradition of boat excursions during hanami season. Suizan composes the scene so the blossoming branches frame the top of the image while the river's current carries the eye horizontally, creating a layered depth from foreground water through the boat to the flowering bank beyond. The Oi River at Arashiyama has appeared in Japanese art and poetry since the Heian period, and Suizan's print updates this literary landscape for the shin-hanga era. The woodblock technique captures the shimmer of water beneath petals with parallel lines of graduated blue, while the cherry blossoms above receive the softer, more diffused treatment of layered pink printing.
