Koson's vast output of ~450 designs spans birds, flowers, fish, insects, and occasional landscapes. While his large production keeps most prints accessible, early Kokkeido-period impressions with muted, elegant Meiji-era coloring are distinctly more sought after than the brighter later Watanabe editions.
Printed in 1904 during the Russo-Japanese War, this print representing the Battle of Jiuliancheng — a major engagement in Manchuria — reveals a very different Koson from the peaceful bird-and-flower artist of his mature career. War prints were a commercial staple during the conflict, and even artists associated with quieter subjects produced battlefield imagery to meet public demand. This early war print documents both the historical moment and the breadth of what was expected from printmakers during Japan's period of imperial expansion.
