Description
The Ebisu Jinja gate (戎神社門) marks the entrance to one of Japan's many shrines dedicated to Ebisu, the god of fishing, commerce, and good fortune — one of the Seven Lucky Gods. Ebisu shrines are found throughout Japan but are particularly associated with fishing communities, where the deity's patronage over the sea's bounty was of immediate practical importance. Bakufu's rendering of this shrine gate connects his marine and natural history interests to the religious culture that surrounded Japan's fishing economy.
