"Planting Rice" depicts one of Japan's most ancient and symbolically charged agricultural rituals: the transplanting of rice seedlings into the flooded paddy field in early summer. The bent backs of the planters, the mirrored surface of the flooded field, and the geometric regularity of the planted rows are among the iconic visual experiences of the Japanese agricultural year. Bakufu's genre depiction of this labor honors it with the observational care he brought to his natural history subjects, treating the human labor of feeding Japan as worthy of artistic record.
