"Rice Harvest" depicts the culminating moment of Japan's agricultural year: the cutting of the fully ripened rice plants in autumn, their golden stalks bent under the weight of full grain. The harvest was the pivot point of the Japanese rural calendar — the time when a year's labor either paid off or fell short — and carried deep cultural and religious significance, with harvest festivals (aki matsuri) celebrated across Japan. Bakufu's rendering of this scene honors the labor and meaning of the harvest with the same care he gave to his fish subjects.
