"Rice Weeding — Variant 1" depicts the tedious but essential task of removing weeds from the rice paddy during the growing season — labor that required repeated entry into the muddy, flooded field under summer heat. Weeding was predominantly women's work in traditional Japanese agriculture, and images of women bent over in the paddy under round bamboo hats are common in Japanese genre art. Bakufu's first variant of this subject suggests he explored the composition through multiple prints, each finding a different resolution of the visual problem.
