"Unknown, Rice Planting" depicts the transplanting of rice seedlings into the flooded paddy — the most labor-intensive moment in the agricultural year, when teams of workers bent double for hours, pushing young plants into the mud at regular intervals. The flooded field reflects sky and clouds between the rows of seedlings, creating a distinctive visual alternation of green and silver that was one of Japan's most recognizable agricultural landscapes. Bakufu's handling of this scene reflects his consistent interest in the human labor that shaped Japan's countryside.
