Description
Chiyoda Castle — the Imperial Palace compound in central Tokyo — offered Hashimoto a subject combining feudal stonework, water, and the clean erasure that snowfall brings to architectural detail. This undated print likely depicts the broad stone-faced ramparts and moat that remain publicly visible along the palace periphery, with accumulated snow flattening tonal variation and isolating geometric forms. Hashimoto's sosaku-hanga method gave him direct control over ink density and gradation; winter subjects rewarded that control, allowing him to reserve bare washi for snowfields and apply careful bokashi along the water's edge. The moat's reflective surface, a recurring device in his castle compositions, introduces horizontal counterpoint to the vertical thrust of the walls.
