Description
Stillness (Sand Garden No. 2, Tenryuji Temple), printed in 1958, is likely a related or variant composition to the numbered edition of the Tenryu-ji garden print issued the same year. The Tenryu-ji garden — attributed to the Zen priest and garden designer Muso Soseki — was among the most celebrated karesansui gardens in Japan, its composition of stones and gravel having been refined over centuries of monastic use. Hashimoto's engagement with this garden at the same moment in both editions suggests an intensive period of study of the site.
